I looked at a couple of the pdf ppt presentations from the fee conference and some were done very well and told a good story. Seems the issue is matching up brand expectations to not alienate customers.
So, for SWA, the extra fee for extra service makes sense. This could be a start down the slippery slope though.
All the fees they are starting to charge is not something EVERY passengers going to do, i.e, pets, UM, third checked bags. So the negative impact on SWA is very minimum.
I do agree with you saying "this could be a start down to the slippery slope" when they start charging for things EVERYONE like to have, i.e, sodas, snacks, 1st checked bags, change reservations fees, etc.
