Is there another flight you would rather be on (and has seats that you would prefer) If so, then call AA and explain that the schedule change doesn't work for you and ask to be put on the preferred plane. Obviously this has drawbacks (esp. w/regard to a multi-segment itinerary) but if the seat issue is this important it might be worth a try.

Yes, there is another flight that we prefer (better plane), but so far there are no reward seats open so I have to wait to see if they open up. That's the first thing I tried, but I'm stuck at this point. I'm a little over 30 days before the trip so I'll keep checking. There's one flight that would work perfectly and AA is willing to move us to that plane (if it opens up more award seats) since they were the ones that took away our desired original choice.
