You can park for free on the street a few blocks south of 59th St. the first few blocks will have permit parking. But after that it's all free parking. I did that two months ago and it was just a quick 10 minute walk to the CTA Metro stop.
Is it safe to park a "newish" car on the street (break-ins not a problem)?
