As of July 1, all mile upgrades require a copay. It looks like SYD-LAX will be 30,000 miles each way plus a co-pay of between $250-500 each way (for M and lower fares - Y and B have no co-pay). The one positive is that you can upgrade any fare - I'm not familiar with the pricing to/from SYD - some have indicated that this could be cheaper than the current arrangement. For TATL travel it looks like it is going to cost more than the current upgrade rules.
