An amateur does a MR (sorry, kind of long)
I did a single day MR yesterday and as someone who rarely posts to FT and has only made one MR prior to this, I thought some might be interested in my experiences. I didn't have any flights scheduled during the DEQM period and wanted to take advantage of it, so decided to take the MR in an effort to help maintain might lowly 2P position.
My criteria was to travel as far as I could, for as cheap as I could, while keeping the trip to a single day. The trip I came up with was to take UA 867 from IAD to LAX, 808 from LAX to SFO, and then 39 from SFO back to IAD. UA 867 was to leave IAD at 08:22 and 39 was to arrive back at IAD at 00:05 the next morning; not exactly the same day, but close enough for my purposes. This resulted in 5144 BIS miles for a RT cost of just under $230 dollars. With the DEQM, that will give me a bit over 10,000 miles added to my EQM total.
All three flights were very full, no surprised there. I didn't upgrade my 867 flight, but since I was in seat 13D on a 2 class 767, the flight was fine. It left on time and got in a bit early. I did upgrade the LAX - SFO and the SFO - IAD portions, both of which were scheduled to be on 757-200s. I was a bit concerned when I did the OLCI and couldn't check in to the SFO-IAD flight. I tried again when at Dulles and even went to the counter. They didn't know what the problem was, but said that it showed that checkin was suspended.
When I got to LAX, I tried checking in again to the SFO-IAD flight and still wasn't able to. Customer support people said that it was now showing a plane change, but not to what. I was concerned about a possible downgrade to a 319 or 320 since as a 2P I was sure that would put me back in ecconomy and I had a vision of being in a middle seat back in E- (yeah, I know that shouldn't happen, but worse have).
The flight to SFO went fine. Only about half of F was occupied. No meal service, of course, but a couple drinks helped pass the time.
When we got to SFO, I immediately went to a service kiosk and found out that they had switched the plane to a 3 class 767 I was assigned a seat in C. I can take that. I compared seatguru to the seatmap shown on the kiosk and saw that this had the new seating arrangement. I've been curious about the rear facing seats, so decided to switch to one of those. I figured that a relatively short five hour flight accros country was a better way to try one than a much longer flight international.
This flight back was great, even though it was about 20 minutes late boarding and arriving at IAD. With these new seats, C on a 3 class 767 is much better than F in a 752.
The delay was caused my a failure with the AV system. They finally decided that it would delay the flight at least an hour to get it fixed and so decided to take off without it working. That was fine with me since I had loaded my laptop with movies and wasn't planning to use it anyway. When they announced that they would hand out compensation, that sounded great. They did get the system to work after an hour or so into the flight, so no compensation but I did get to try the system out. The 15" screen is great.
Anyway, that my experience with a one day MR. Sorry for the long post.
