Recently I've flown mostly international, which in the lower fare brackets isn't upgradable anyways, but often the option is available to upgrade for cash while checking in or at the gate. Sometimes this can be say, $600 or $700 for Y > C. Under this new policy, I'd be spending $500 and at least 20,000 miles! The choice is easy its between that many miles and an extra $100.
