They sent a letter to me saying basically: "Sorry about the ticket, but we gave you an amenity so be happy because we don't give breakfasts here even though it's in the terms and conditions. Here, have a coupon for a free night the next time you're in Denver, but you can only use this coupon at this hotel (where we still won't give you breakfast)."

To be honest, I'd rather have a coupon for a free night's stay than a breakfast or 2. Do you still have that coupon??? Just kidding! However, I certainly understand your frustration. As a newly minted Gold who has yet to stay as a Gold HHonors, I will definitely bring the HHonors terms and conditions with me in case I have to show them that I am entitled to these amenities.
