I went there a cople of years ago during their mardi gras week (first week of august), and it's kind of nice...don't expect none of the beaches you menctioned because it has a very peculiar style of its own.
First of all, is not that international as a destination, so you'll be surrounded mostly (98%) by italians, which (sadly) means that english communication will be difficult. Beaches are amazing, food is amazing, the B&B I stayed in was OK, and during the mardi gras week there's street parties every night, which is very fun.
If you arrive there with an open mind, you'll have fun. You can also combine the beach with some cultural/historical/landscape sightseeings in deep Tuscany, and of course, wine tastings!
But if your expectations are 5* gay holiday destinations as Ipanema or Mykonos, forget it, you won't like it.
