I do think Tumi is a very good brand and they do have some outright iconic pieces like the 26141 briefcase, which I think is one of the best ever made and which I proudly own.
They excel mostly in terms of carry luggage, not check in luggage. Their rollers are way too heavy and the design is not that intelligent. I find that Travelpro Plat 5 and Samsonite and Delsey rollers can have much smarter designs.
I hear the warranty is very good but I also hear the customer support has gone downhill. I have not yet had a claim to make.
I would be willing to bet that in the USA Tumi luggage is among the most pilfered because it is relatively well-known as being expensive.
Seriously, try a TP Plat5 (I don't know how the new Plat6 is) or even a Briggs Riley. Quality is comparable, warranty as good or better, layout as good or better, weight as heavy or lighter. Design in terms of esthetics though is better on Tumi in basically all cases, I give you that.
