I can only speak from personal experience. I have made back-to-back reservations where the room type was not available on one of the days (middle of res). On arrival I was given the room type for the first res and did not have to change rooms. You can break up your res into back-to-back ones. That may solve the problem.
If your changes results in a higher charge, you will have to make a completely new reservation.
Awards are ONLY for standard rooms. If your res is not for a standard room you can't change it into an award.
In regards to awards, can't tell what VIP level you are. If you are NOT Diamond, you can switch to a pay res to award ONLY if standard awards are still available. If they are all gone, you can NOT switch (and switch is only for a standard room, no special rooms). If you are Diamond, you can change it into an award res even if standards are not longer available. Awards are for standard rooms only and for whatever type of bed is left in inventory. So if all kings are gone, you would get the twin standards.
