The Doubletree, Embassy Suites and Hamptons lines were acquired by purchase (what? ten years ago??) consequently logic would suggest that would be a certain overlap in the type of lodgers and or areas thay might attract or attemt to serve.
The only real overlap in market segment that I've noticed is the Hilton/Doubletree brands. As you pointed out, DT was an acquisition and perhaps had enough goodwill in its own brand to continue rather than to re-brand the properties as a Hilton.
I agree with you in that Hilton hit a home run with HGI. As you pointed out, most of the properties are newer. We'll see if the image tarnishes when the properties get 15+ years on them.
