I have done exactly what you are talking about before...it's quite easy. Just remember to request "inter-airline transfer" on your luggage at the NWA desk in HKG, and they'll scuffle it to your NRT plane for you without having to clear customs.

Even with H1N1, coming from a non-ex-North America flight, you'll be fine!
