If you misconnect in ORD, you should have a good chance to get on the ORD-NRT non-stop flight because the misconnect was caused by a delay. As for getting on a Star Alliance partner instead, that would probably depend on a number of factors, including what caused the delay (non-weather related is more favorable for you) and whether your ticket is a mileage or fare based one. You shouldn't have to pay any additional money in either scenario, although YMMV.
