In response to your second question, I'm assuming you're on the early BNA-ORD flight to catch the ORD-SFO flight that will catch SFO-NRT. If BNA-ORD is delayed and you miss your connection, you may still be able to make the ORD-NRT direct flight.
The second question is the one that has me worried more, now. I've never had more than one stop in between connections, domestic or international. Will I have to pay anything if I miss my SFO-NRT flight because of delays, to get on another flight? Can they put me on, say, another Star Alliance partner from ORD, or SFO if I get there too late?
