+1 for Interlining.

Check in with a human at HKG and (politely) ask them to check your baggage all the way through to SFO (or wherever your final destination is). I've found it helpful to have paper copies of my itineraries on-hand for these sort of requests. (I normally leave it all saved in email on my BlackBerry otherwise...)
