Like anything else, it's location that makes a difference. A night at Hampton Inn in the greater Chicago area is more expensive than a night at a Hampton Inn in Oklahoma City.

Competition is fierce on I-40 in OKC. There are a dozen hotels at each exit. Not true in Chicago.

My travel tends to be away from major cities, so I don't think I've ever paid more than $70/night.
