pointman: Fairfield Inn is also the one Marriott that I don't get ANY mileage for, so I pretend they don't exist. If I don't like the Hampton price, I usually find no better price at any hotel that would give me mileage, so then I go for the cheapest anything (often a non-chain indie from the AAA book, or surprisingly some of the extended stay chains are cheaper in some cities than most majors) that has the amenities I want (if not a good breakfast a la Hampton, I tend to want a fridge; and since in some cities I have to do many dialing attempts for my computer to connect, I really loathe charges for local/800 calls!).
