That's nothing -- about a year ago, I volunteered 3 days in a row to be bumped from the SFO-SYD flight (in January, when the flights were absolutely crazy sold out with Aussies trying to get home, and this was local on both ends for me, I wasn't in any rush, and it wasn't a hassle to do it). By the 2nd and 3rd days, the supervisor who was working the flight knew me by sight, and bumped me at checkin >3 hours before (of course, knowing that it would still be well oversold by departure time).

As for the GA putting you on the other flight, that is lucky -- I was of the impression that it is a big no-no for agents to fix their oversold situation by pushing passengers onto other stations' oversold flights.
