You are kidding, right? The last category change was a great improvement for SPG members, most hotels dropped.
I actually had to stay in some non Starwood/Hyatt cities for work this last winter and was of course thrown Hilton Gold after me. The points have piled up (I thought), but with around 90K in my HHonors account now, what are they good for? 3 nights at a 70 USD Hampton Inn..
Sure, there are more Hilton family properties out there, but 90% is 2 star crap anyways. If that's your cup of tea, HHonors is great for you.
The SPG Amex earnings is not the best out there, but when you consider how much more worth a Starpoint is compared to HHonors points, why bother..
The only good thing I find about HHonors is the BMI points and the free breakfast.
