My sister-in-law went to Delhi, India from YOW in early Feb, when her father was sick. However, it was felt he would recover - that there was no danger of imminent death.
Although he did recover, he did deteriorate again by the end of March, and then he died.
My sister-in-law had bought a discounted economy ticket (the cheapest AC ticket, with codesharing on LH between Germany and India), with the scheduled return date a few days before he died. She did not buy any travel insurance. She could not use the return part of the ticket (as he was dying at that time), but had to buy a new one-way ticket (in this case on LX) to get back to Ottawa - some time after her original scheduled return.
Could she have had some recourse with AC, at the time of the rebooking her return, under the bereavement policy? Could she have some recourse now with AC, under their bereavement policy?
Of note, I called the AC call centre at the time that she had decided that he was imminently dying - the agent said she had no recourse (except to cancel, and get a credit for a future flight, minus the penalty of cancellation; however, although I did not ask him about AC's bereavement policy per se, the agent did not volunteer anything about that policy being applicable in this case).
PS-What fares, booking codes, and discounts off face value of the tickets are obtained with bereavement fares?
