+1 on the "drive to Pune" option. I did this a few months ago--with the new(ish) highway and a driver who was having Michael Schumacher fantasies, it took less than 2 hours to get from the Grand Hyatt in Mumbai (very near BOM) to the Meridien in downtown Pune. I gained a few gray hairs in the process, but it was vastly quicker than flying. Even with a driver using a normal rate of speed, it would still be quicker than flying, considering the terminal transfer issues.
My driver had been with me for 4 days in Mumbai before we drove to Pune, and he seemed quite sane and normal. I think it was the incredible shock of having a wide-open road before him that pushed him over the edge. I think for most Indians this is akin to waking up to 6 inches of snow on the ground
