I always bring my daughter's birth certificate but have never been asked for it. In fact, the first couple of times I showed it, I was told I didn't need it. I'm fairly certain at least one of these instances was on United.

Bring the hospital documentation just to be safe, but don't sweat it--as others said, it's really for the lap kids that look like they could be two or over.
