I think AA just wants to make sure you are in possession of the required documents. Entering a passport number, doesn't mean you have the passport in your possession. Apparently AA has been hit by fines, which is why there is an issue of DME MRs for people without a Russian passport or visa.
I believe in this case, BA for example, does the docs check at the gate. I cannot get a BP to SDQ from a kiosk despite no visa being required. It always says wait for agent.
