EDIT: Now why AA can't seem to offer online checkin for international flights is beyond me. CO does, CX does, pretty much all European airlines do. You can't even complete a kiosk checkin for international with AA without having to also see an agent.
I think AA just wants to make sure you are in possession of the required documents. Entering a passport number, doesn't mean you have the passport in your possession. Apparently AA has been hit by fines, which is why there is an issue of DME MRs for people without a Russian passport or visa.
