I always check-in via kiosk when travelling internationally and never have any problems. If I have issues that need to be addressed, I handle it at the AC. The only time I had a problem using the kiosk was when travelling to GIG because the agent had to ensure that I had a Brazilian visa.
That said, it is very frustrating that AA does not offer online check-in when others do.
