First, Welcome to FT.

The SSSS has more or less been eliminated recently - it still exists, but chances are you won't get it .. unless you're really unlucky.

If you encounter a MMW machine you can refuse - it doesn't matter if you're a US citizen or not. Instead of going through the MMW you will get a pat down.

If asked why you don't want to go through the MMW, tell them you don't want to be virtually strip searched and would prefer a pat-down.

Just because MIA has a MMW machine doesn't mean there is one at each checkpoint in each terminal - someone who uses MIA on a more regular basis than I do can probably comment where these machines are.
