Thought I'd update this thread. Was advised by some other people that VLC sucks for playing AVCHD files. Was told to use Splash instead.

Installed, presto! 24 mbps plays almost perfectly. There is a tiny, tiny bit of lag but it's 100x better than before.

No idea on a Mac equivalent, though.
