US banks tend to charge anywhere between 1% to 3% for international transactions. This is purely profit for the banks and has nothing to do with the SQ.
Why would you run your checking account balance so low that a simple foreign transaction fee would make it negative?
Also why on earth are you using a debit card to pay for airline tickets in the first place?
