I also try to avoid flying Mesa, but sometimes it is challenging due to schedule or some airports simply don't have mainline service.
In early March, I flew PHX-ELP (return), both ways on Mesa. I found the planes very worn, but the FA's extremely friendly. The exit row does give more legroom, and I'd suggest that, or row 1 (so you can get off the plane fast).
Actually on my return trip, I had food poisoning, and the FA was very nice helping me get home (it is bad enough being sick, even worse on the road).
