I would never allow any phone company to automatically put a charge on my credit card. It could complicate the removal of improper charges, because the phone company would already have my money.

As indicated on the web page mentioned above, there are things that can be done to reduce one's chances of being slammed or crammed, but it's always possible.

Just call your phone company and request a lock on your account. This requires your current company to contact you when a change in phone carrier is requsted. If you have a problem with your billing, you can always have the credit card company dispute the charge for you.
