The 744's still have plenty of useful life left, and when DL no longer needs them, odds are it will make a lot more economic sense to sell them than park one in a museum.
Maybe it is just me, but I honestly feel like the DC-9 is more of an NW icon than the 747. The DC-9 has been the workhorse for NW (and Republic) and is more closely affiliated with NW.
