We got bumped on the IAD-LAX leg of our trip last year that was continuing onto LAX-NRT. We had applied SWU's for LAX-NRT but they hadn't yet cleared 8 hours before the flight. We convinced them to put us on the non-stop IAD-SIN in C (not NC!) and give us $400 each. We ended up getting to NRT at the same time, with the assured upgrade, and the 50% COS EQM bonus. So yes, it most definitely can be done. Of course, the fact that they were 20+ over on the flight, and IDBing lots of disgruntled pax probably helped our negotiating power!
That is a nice bump story. That said, did you mean the non-stop IAD-NRT?
That is what I assume, and you ended up with 2300 more EQM because of the COS bonus. Pretty sweet deal.
