In Asia they tend to not charge you until you have checked-out, especially in Taiwan and Japan.
We had two prepaid reservations in January at IC ANA Tokyo and ANA Kyoto. In both cases my card was charged well in advance.
But the record belongs to HIX Causeway Bay in Hong Kong (with a Best Flexible Rate reservation,) where they screwed up badly: pre-authorized the full cost of my stay the day before check-in, then put another hold for the full cost plus some sum for incidentals and then finally charged my card again during check-out.
So in my experience it's ALWAYS Asian hotels which have problems with credit card infrastructure, I have never had similar problems in Europe or the States.
