My cufflinks and collar stiffeners do set off the metal detectors. The safety pins might - almost everything seems to these days. It also varies from airport to airport.

However, I think there are set maximum lengths for sharp items. I have had sewing scissors found and let through. I wear a stick pin for blood donation and that has never been a problem. So I don't think safety pins would necessarily be confiscated.
