That is a sad moment in history. Decades ago, I flew on a DC-8 series 40 or 50. It was a good plane. It is said that Douglas Aircraft lost money on the entire program up to the 50 series. The 60 series were superior aircraft compared to competitors. Oddly enough, the one time I flew the DC-8 was on UA on the LAX-SFO route, which the flight was supposed to have been operated by a 727.
