Thanks, if it's my mistake I will probably have to suck it up. It just never occurred to me that upgrading a refundable flight could be non-refundable, I assumed it would be covered by the general rules covering BA Miles booking.
It's interesting that as well as driving the operational costs down for airlines, the web channel also puts much more responsibility on the consumer. I am a pretty bright chap and I have made a few mistakes in my time so I would hate to think how much money consumers lose every year caused by booking mistakes made on the internet. Worse one I ever made was turning up for a 00.10 flight from BKK to LHR a day late as I had it in my head that it was the last flight of the day rather than the first (if you understand my meaning)! That mistake cost me £750 and I was grateful as had it been a day later it would have cost me £1500.
