Differential Country Pricing

I'm sure this is the wrong forum but I couldn't find anywhere else more suitable.
Anyways.
I was wondering why there was such a large price difference when purchasing the same airfare from a different country.
E.g. I live in London and looked up airfare to JFK. On the American site it came to about $450, but I was unable to pay it as I didn't have an American credit card.
On the British website, the same journey was charged at 375 pounds, which is about $700!
The Canadian website also charged more, about $700 something.
