Same experience here. Two times I went in there for my redeye SFO-ORD, with the same girl, she took my boarding pass, then asked me to have a seat inside, saying she would return my boarding pass later. (hinting she is writing down my information from my boarding pass without me standing there to wait and not to form a line) There were quite a few people also go in there before their SFO-SYD flight.

No, but you can always go to Intl Terminal and take a shower there for $11. It is right by security
If one is already in intl terminal, why not just go to SKL to have to shower instead and save $11 ? Spending $11 for a shower I would rather spend it for a bowl of hot ramen noodles in the terminal.
