Do you have to stay in Port when you're back during the peak season? If not, go a bit farther up to Cape Tribulation. It's about 90 minutes north of where you are now, and barring exceptional amounts of recent rainfall, a regular car will get you all the way there (most rental contracts won't let you go beyond, due to road conditions).

Far North Queensland is way too beautiful a place to be ruined by a less-than-perfect hotel. Hopefully you were able to enjoy the rest of your stay.
