If you dont want to pay any tolls, take rt 7 eastbound to West Falls Church, but you will need to arrive before 10:30 am on most weekdays to get a parking space

otherwise you can pay a toll, and with kids you can be in the HOV lane, and take the Toll Road to Rt 7.

There is also a Herndon Commuter Bus center, you can park there for free and take the airport bus to DC for $3.10 per person

with 4 or 5 days you may want to try it omnne daty and see which you like better

also metro offers an unlimited day pass - good after am rush hour - for about $7 a day
