I am the Hilton EWR right now and have stayed here about six times so far this year. For golds or diamonds they will typically give you both a breakfast voucher AND a drink voucher. Upgrades to suites are not especially common but the rooms are fine. The weekend rates are typically $119 and some of the personnel are quite nice. I have known one fellow for several years from the time he worked for the Embassy Suites in Parsippany, NJ. I have also enjoyed chatting with "Juan", who I only met a few months ago but has always treated me very well. I have never stayed at the Gateway Hilton but have also been warned about it by other FTers whose opinion I respect. The only thing I can say in its favor is that its fairly close to some very nice Spanish/Portuguese restaurants in Newark. Incidentally, the two Hiltons do deploy a van shuttling between them every hour or so.
