That's extremely dangerous. All you need is a grumpy/arrogant officer and you're kicked out of the program. Your Nexus is linked to your passport, and having a full passport is no excuse to not carry it, even if it's at the passport office (in these cases you pay the fee to expedite it). I've had several cases where the officer ignores my nexus card and asks for my passport when I'm not using a machine.
