Well, his status may precede his experience, but he is travelling by himself for the first time. But, according to 9W policy on UMs:

For our domestic sectors
: A child between the age of 5 years and 12 years travelling alone is termed as an Unaccompanied Minor (UM). A child under 12 years is treated as an unaccompanied minor even though accompanied by a guest who is 13 years but under 18 years.

For our international sectors
: A child between the age of 6 years and 12 years travelling alone is termed as an Unaccompanied Minor (UM). A child under 12 years is treated as an unaccompanied minor even though accompanied by a guest who is 13 years but under 18 years.

Definitely he will not be part of Jet's UM program. But, since he is a UM travelling independently, whatever he learned in all his years of travel, I hope he puts it into good practice.

(P.S.: I feel bad that you're flaunting your elite frequent flyer status! Pity me for being 18 but only sticking to base membership on Northwest! )
