You chose to wear shoes to the airport. ORD in winter, say, when going barefoot would have been an option. It's clearly your fault.
How long before someone starts selling (in the style of the "approved laptop bag") TSA-compliant shoes that slip on (no laces) and have, umm, really hard soles that can't be hollowed out? No, maybe transparent soles. "TSA's glass slippers" (If someone here does this, I want a cut of the royalties.)
Another thought. You can take a spare set of shoes in your carry-on, and they don't have to come out, right? So what if you put your shoes (in a shoe bag) into your carry-on and show up at the checkpoint barefoot? @:-)
