Is what true? I've heard some horror stories about Texas---are they true? What other major cities have you visited?

We also want to visit and attend classes at the Alvin Ailey Dance Studio, somewhere in New York City - not sure of there location or feedback.
Definitely go to a bookstore and get yourself a NYC guidebook. Questions like this will easily be answered. You can also go to Alvin Ailey's website (as well as other attractions that interest you) as they also will tell you its location and directions on how to get there.

One of the most fun parts of a trip to a new city is preparing for it. Check out websites like the one below too as they are geared for tourists both new and return. http://nycgo.com/
