name on ticket and passport mismatch

A while back I booked a Star Alliance business class award ticket on Singapore Airlines via United with my Mileage Plus miles, traveling from NY City to Asia.

When originally booking the trip, the lady at United mistakenly placed my last name as part of my middle name and *in addition* to my last name. So my name on the ticket wound-up being something like "John Steven Smith Smith".

Obviously, this is not my name as it appears on my passport which correctly has down "John Steven Smith".

I noticed this problem and a few calls to United later they say that they have contacted Singapore Airlines and a "note" is now placed on my e-ticket/reservations so that the agent at the airport check-in counter will be aware of the discrepancy and allow me to check-in regardless of my last name being repeated twice.

They said this "note" is the only option besides re-issuing the ticket, which takes a chance of there not being another award seat available to book. Thus, the "note" is the best option according to United and Singapore.

Here are my questions:
1) Is this "note" 100%-sure to fix the problem?
2) Will security notice the name difference and turn me away from boarding?
3) Or is once the boarding pass from the Singapore Agent is issued signify that I am OK to pass through security?

I have been looking so forward to this trip for a while now and just do not want any bumps in the road, i.e. just want everything to go as planned.

Thanks for your help.
