Because by boarding the rear first means you don't have passengers further forward blocking the aisles trying to store their hand baggage whilst everybody else is trying to board.

At LGW the TRMs usually only ask for this to be done if the flight has been late inbound and they're trying to turn it round in time to meet its slot.
