Actually, if it were simple for the OP, he probably would still have his first iPod. People who find it simple to be organized and to remember are blessed with a skill that some of us have to work at.
I think engraving is best. But fly with a shirt that has a pocket and always leave the iPod in your pocket. You also might try to wear your earphones/earplugs throughout the flight so your iPod will be attched to you and you won't forget it.
