I've had a few inconveniences with CBP. I'm younger, travel a lot, and I travel for fun. CBP hates me because to them "sight seeing" or "vacation" is not a valid reason to travel. The lessons I've learned:

1) Do not make small talk. Greet with a "Sir" or "Ma'am". Answer questions. Politely request an stamp be made in your passport (I collect stamps and use them to figure out my travel history. It's a BIG help to have an entry AND exit for each international trip). They do NOT like you to ask them for it after you've been scooted along towards the customs.
2) If they ask you about your profession, do not offer up any occupation that would not be able to support your travels on that pay check. Once, I was between jobs and flying on my uncle's FF miles and that bit of honesty earned me a second screening.
