Surcharge for to speak with human-- I had no choice!

I recently booked award travel for my wife on AA from LAX-NRT-NGO. Because of the Japan domestic leg I had no choice but to make the reservation with a reservation agent. This meant that I was charged an additional $20 for not using the online reservations option. I had no choice since the online system doesn't work for codeshare on JAL. So, why should I be forced to pay the luxury charge of enjoying a nice chat with a human reservation agent when there's no other choice? I contacted AA about this and they just said that's the way it goes...
